PREDICTING EARTHQUAKES.
In your issue of the 12th instant yon publish* a lengthy report of an interview wiu Professor Schafler, the noted Austrian geologist, who states most definitely that earthquakes ''cannot be predicted."' It is unfortnnato that his attention was not drawn to the numerous occasions on which "quakes have befti predicted, through both the columns of _the " Star " and other papers by Mr. F. K- Fieia, of this city. I have attended several of hi? lectures and taken notes on many occasion* during the past four years, with the result that in almost every case the forecast of beta volcanic activity and earthquakes has come true to schedule, although the prediction habeen made in some Vases many mentis previously. As far back as April 26 last Mr. Field predicted that volcanic activity would commence and an earthquake would occur on September 5, nearly Jive" month? hence. Boti of these things came to pass. He has further predicted that both conditions will occur at the beginning of October next. C. E. GIESON-
