SAFETY ON TRAINS.
Referring to the letter signed by "Safety First" suggesting that an automatic device be fitted to trains to pull them up in the event of their leaving the rails, it might be mentioned that 6uch a device was patented some time ago and was offered to the New Zealand Government Railway Department, but for some unknown reason, although the cost of the apparatus would be approximately only *1 per vehicle, the invention was declined, notwithstanding the fact that a similar invention and one not quite as good as the New Zealand invention, is already in operation on the railways in one of the Australian states.
