FIRE AT MANUREWA.
A large modern residence in Hall Road, Manurewa, owned and occupied by Mrs. A. E. Howe, had a narrow escape from destruction by fire at an early hour last evening. Mrs. Howe and her young son were in one of the bedrooms when they were startled by a crackling sound in the kitchen, and on rushing out found a fire ragincr in the hot-water service cupboard. Mrs. Howe immediately telephoned for assistance, and within a remarkably short space of time many willing hands were at work. A remarkable save was effected despite the absence of any fire-fighting apparatus, the flames being checked when they had completely burnt out the cupboard walls and ceiling, also the greater part of the kitchen ceiling and a portion of the adjoining sitting-room. The building was insured, but a large quantity of clothing and blankets, valued at about £30, which helped to feed the flames, was not covered. It is a coincidence that only last week fires broke out in the hot water cupboards of two other houses in the neigh - boorhood.
