NEEDS OF THAMES.

'resident magistrate.

LOCAL AGRICULTURAL OFFICER,

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

THAMES, this day,

The Chamber of Commerce discussed the appointment of an officer of the Agricultural Department at Thames. It was stated that a large district was crying out for information, but the nearest officers were at Hamilton. Expert local advice was badly needed. It was decided to request the Department to appoint a local officer. Members brought up the matter of a resident magistrate at Thames. Since Mr. J. L. Salmon was transferred, the magistrate has lived at Hamilton, and it was stated that he could not give attention to local matters, with the result that there was delay. Solicitors were emphatic in their opinion that a change was needed. It was decided to write to the Justice Department urging that Thames needs a resident magistrate.

Regarding the Hauraki bridge, over the Waihou River, it was stated that it was possible that it would be complete by Christmas. It was decided to wait on the Public Works engineer and request him to expedite the work.
