RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.

SOME SMART GALLOPS. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The- weather was dull, and there was a cold breeze while training operations were in progress this morning. The No. 6 grass track provided first-class galloping ground, and some interesting gallops were registered. P. V. Mason was out with his team early, and gave all of them useful tasks. After breakfast Sagittarius covered six furlongs, but he was only going comfortably. Paperchase ran seven furlongs in 1.31 1-5, a useful effort. Silver Coot appeared to be going comfortably alongside Noteworthy at the end of three furlongs, run in 38 l-ss.

Scoff went well over six furlongs, taking 1.2 2-5 for the last five furlongs.

Footfall was sent a mile and a-quar-ter by himself. He went at a sound pace all the way, doing the full journey in 2.12 3-5, and running the last three furlongs in 41s. He carried a lightweight, but it was a useful gallop.. Aberfeldy and Spode occupied 1.17 2-5 for the. last six of seven furlongs. Starflight sprinted half a mile comfortably in 525.

Don Jose, with Paper Boy as a mate for the last six furlongs, ran seven furlongs in 1.32, and was going very well at the end.

Front Rank covered seven furlongs in 1.32 1-5, and finished on well, while Scramble ran a mile in 1.46.

Bailiff gave Amor and a Clareneeux — La Paix gelding a start and a beating in a three-furlong sprint.

Beau Geste and Streamer were associated over a mile. Streamer was showing in front for the first five furlongs' run in 1.5, but Beau Geste was alongside his mate at the finish, the full journey taking 1.46.

Hoylake and Master Clarence led Assurance all through a spin over seven furlongs. They ran the first half-mile in 525, and finished their task in 1.30 3-5, with Assurance running on strongly a length behind the other pair.

Countersign and Rotor took 1.19 4-5 to run six furlongs.

Thorndale, Mah Jong and Tarleton were companions over seven furlongs. Thorndale was out in front a furlong from the post, but Mah Jong finished well, and was on terms at the winning post. Tarleton was several lengths away, his effort being disappointing. Centrepiece and Sky Quest were together at the end of seven furlongs, which they covered in 1.31. Bolero registered, a smart sprint by beatinT Lady Swintort over half a mile fin 49 3-ss. Count Cavour ran seven furlongs alone. The pace was solid all through, the last six furlongs being done in 1.15 4-5. The Cup horse went in his customary free style. Martarma and Chickwheat attracted a lot of attention when they went out for a mile gallop. They ran the first two furlongs in 265, five furlong in 1.4 1-5, and the full distance in 1.43 2-5. Chickwheat had a slight advantage most of the way, but Martarma, on being shaken up, soon ran up to. him. Martarma was conceding a little weight, and the manner in which ho accomplished his task was pleasing to his admirers. Satrap and Luminant covered a mile in 1.46 2-5. going at an even pace all the way. Satrap gave his mate a start of two lengths, and he was going comfortably alongside her at the finish. Rascal and Jarretiere showed plenty of dash in sprinting five furlongs in 1.3 1-5.

The two-year-olds. Silver Arc and Louise, reeled off half a mile nicely in 50 3-ss.

The Harp finished three lengths in front of Solferite and Wreath of Myrtle at the end of seven furlongs, the last six taking 1.18.

Cornstalk and Gold Mint ran seven furlongs in 1.31 1-5. They finished together, and looked as if they could have done a little better. Heisler covered six furlongs in 1.20, going freely all the way. Silver Paper and Paris broke away slowly from the half-mile post and ran the last three furlongs in 39 3-ss. Margaret Birney jumped off three lengths in front of Rapier at the ninefurlong post; the - first three furlongs occupied 40s, and the six being run in 1.19 1-5. The full journey took 1.58, and the last mile 1.44 3-5, with Rapier an easy winner. Precious beat Grey finch over five furlongs in 1.3 3-5.

, WANGANUI NOTES.

HORSES FOR AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WANGANUI, Saturday. Wanganui horses engaged at the Avondale meeting leave here on Monday. They are all in good fettle, and some of the stake money at the Avondale and Auckland Clubs' meetings should be won by horses from this district. They all did fast work this morning, when the weather Mas fine and the track in good order. W. Rayner sent Thaw, Damaris, and Mask six furlongs the usual way round on the No. 1 track. The two former had considerably the best of the weights, and jumped off with a fair break on Mask, who was on the outside. The three-year-olds raced together, with Damaris fighting for her head and Mask a couple of lengths in the rear. Going down the back the first quarter was cut out in 25 l-ss, three furlongs in 36 2-ss, and the half-mile in 50 3-ss. At the bottom of the straight Mask got up to the other pair, but over the last bit Damaris fairly bounded away and finished a couple of lengths ahead of Mask, with Thaw close up. The full distance was run in 1.16 4-s—a good gallop, as they were not fully extended and there was a fairly heavy dew on the ground. Mask was going along nicely at the end.

Covent Garden let Episode . have a good break on him in a run from the three furlong peg. The filly found her legs quickly and was in front all the way, the time being 38 3-ss. It was the first occasion on which Episode had been asked to run out three furlongs, and she acquitted herself very well. She is fining up well, and with a race at the Avondale meeting should be in good shape for the Auckland fixture.

Lysander, with a light boy up, ran half a mile comfortably in 50 l-ss. It has been stated that the son of Absurd will not run at the Avondale meeting, where he is only engaged on the second day. However, if the going is good and the weight right he will be a starter.

• The track was a bit faster after breakfast, when Alloway (Knapp) was sent six furlongs the reverse way. He stretched out well, and covered the first half in 50 l-ss, and the full distance in 1.17 4-5.

Kiosk went half a mile the reverse way. He was not at top over the first quarter, but ran the last two furlongs at a fast clip, the time registered for the half-mile being 52 2-ss.

Civility (J. Head) trotted round and then sprinted half a mile the reverse way in 48 4-ss. She was at top speed from the peg, and ran at an even pace, all through. In three successive gallops she has done the half-mile in 51s, 50s, and 48 4-ss, which shows how well she is coming on, though of course the track has also been steadily improving.

Star Area ran the last five of six furlongs in 1.5.

Elysianor (J. Head) and Atene (Mr. Lan Higgie) were companions in a round over the hurdles. The former hopped over his hurdles in rare style, gaining considerably on his companion, but was steadied between the jumps. His display was particularly good for a beginner.
