AUCKLAND CHAMPIONS OF THE DOMINION.
REMARKABLE GOAL SCORING.
By their victory over Northcote on Saturday afternoon at Blandford Park by 2—o, and the defeat of North Shore by Ponsonby on the same ground by 7—l, Thistle made the senior their own. Two goals in minute at the end of a series of thrills in Thistle's match gave them victory when a drawn game seemed inevitable. Ponsonby simply over-ran Me Shore, ibut their superiority would not have been pronounced in all probability had the ground not been a sea of mud. Canterbury failed to defeat Otago in the English Trophy by at least 4 goals, and consequently Auckland again hold the trophy. TWO GOALS IN MINUTE. In a heavy downpour of rain and on the soaked ground of Blandford Park, Thistle beat Northcote by 2—o, their goals coming in the last minute. For fully ten minutes Thistle almost monopolised play, but Hibbert and Taylor defended cleverly. A dashing attack by the Northcote inside men and a shot from Thompson nearly produced a goal. On the. ball coming out to him, the inside left tricked Ferguson and shot low for ' goal. The ball shot across at a great pace, but very smartly Zoull got te it, and turned it outwards for McGarry to send outside. A succession of- thrills followed. Thistle attacked in great style, and shots were sent in from aH directions at intervals of a few seconds. A breakaway by Northcote through the medium of the right wing looked promising, and Thompson made it still more bright when receiving thirty yards from goal he again cleverly drew the defence and touched through for Hall. The latter, however, slipped when putting on pace, and Keid got their first and cleared. Again Thistle opened a succession of attacks, and Stott had to fist out two hot shots from Dunsmore and J. Stewart. D. Stewart also tested him with a drive. Following a quick breakaway, Thompson put the ball into the net, but he was palpably offside, and It was no point. At the other end' Cummings came under notice with three solo runs and three equally good shots, one skidding along the crossbar and others missing by Inches. Half time scores: Thistle 0, Northcote 0. ] Shortly after the restart, Thistle put In a series of attacks, and Dunsmore sent in a beauty, which Stott was smart to clear. A lightning-like breakaway brought temporary relief to Northcote, and a goal looked certain when Thompson pushed the ball across to McGarry, but the player could not gather himself to shoot, and the i chance was missed. Thistle were soon back, and Dunsmore was three yards from goal when Hibbert fouled him. A penalty kick was given, but Ferguson missed the goal by a yard. From this to the end ft was practically all Thistle and a goal any second looked likely. Repeatedly Thistle attacked, but good luck served Northcote well—and a never-say-die defence —and the winning point did not come until a minute from the finish. Then two goals came in succession. Kay had missed a "gift," but a few seconds later passed to Dixon, and that player beat Stott. Thirty seconds afterwards Donsmore got a second goal and placed the full points beyond doubt. The Shore forwards then took play to the Ponies' goal, but the defence held. Shore were now settling down and having their share of the game, but Ponsonby were adapting themselves to the conditions better. After some desultry play in midr field the spell ended. Ponsonby, 2; North Shore, 0. In the second half Ponsonby raided the Shore goal, and Hunter had a shot, which hit the post. Securing again, a moment later, he made no mistake with his second shot, completely beating Lipscombe. Ponsonby, 3-; North Shore, 0. Keeping up the pressure.
