DEVON PORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Devonport Borough Council met , last evening. The Mayor, Mr. E. Aldridge. presided, and councillors present were:— Messrs. J. Hislop, I. Massey, H. A. Campbell, C. M. Browne, F. J. Ellisdon, W. 8. Campbell, S. Lyon, and P. J. Sheehan. Rutland Road Drainage.—Considerable discussion took place with a deputation of ratepayers over storm-water troubles at the foot of Rutland Road. A committee consisting of Messrs. Ellisdon, Campbell and Sheehan were appointed to investigate the matter, and the engineer was instructed to keep the trouble under constant observation. Vauxhall Beach Wall.—The construction of this seawall was considered in connection with the allocation of the unexpended balance of loan money. The engineer reported that 126 piles had now been made, and he estimated that £1030 would be needed to complete the work. It was decided to proceed with the manufacture of the remainder of the piles required. Vauxhall Tennis Courts.—The president of the Tennis Club reported that his club were desirous of completing the construction of the tennis courts in time for the playing season; they had £60 in hand, and wished permission to let a contract for the work, provided the council would relieve them of their liability for repayment of this amount. This was agreed to.

Stanley Bay Improvements.—Mr. Browne dissented from a recommended plan of improvements on the Stanley Park. He objected to the construction of a large storage culvert as being liable to create nuisance on the playing fields. Mr. Sheehan vigorously supported the engineers scheme as being the only solution of the obvious difficulty of drainage. It was ultimately decided to obtain outside advice on the merits of the scheme.

Queens Parade.—The engineer, Mr. A. T. Griffiths, reported that all stone had now been delivered, and that the walk was now ready to receive the reclamation material.

Treasurer's Report.—The borough treasurer, Mr. A. E. Wilson, presented a summary of the borough finance for the five months of the current year. These showed £30,303 receipts and £25,960 expenditure. Wages £7358, and interest £8373 were the principal items under the latter heading. The unexpended balances of all loans were £12,296. These are definitely allocated for works in hand.
