ONE TREE HILL ROAD BOARD.
The One Tree Hill Road Board met last evening, the chairman, Mr. R. G. Clark, presiding.
Water.—Mr. Clark objected strongly to recent suggestions that if the One Tree Hill water supply was connected with the Mount Roskill service, the city supply would be in danger of " contamination." The engineer, Mr. J. Dawson, reported that the water pressure in the One Tree Hill service was 41b greater than that in the Mount Roskill service, and that One Tree Hill water would probably find its way into the city service. He agreed with the chairman. It was decided, on the motion of the chairman, to cease negotiations with Mount Roskill.
Engineer's Report.—The engineer reported that work was progressing favourably in the Great South Road. The concrete slab has been laid full width on the Church Street-St. Ann's Bridge section, while the concreting of the remaining half-width on the Harp of Erin-Greenpark Road section is well advanced. As no arrangemnt has yet been made with Onehunga for the maintenance of the three new boundary roads, Hauiti Road and portions of Oranga Avenue and Rocktield Road, the engineer suggested that an agreement should be reached as scon as possible. The roads in question, he reported, are in a very bad state.
Ellerslie Drainage.—The engineer reported that he was at present engaged in preparing plans for sewers to drain Ellerslie and the undrained portions of One Tree Hill into the Onehunga sewer at Felix Street. By this scheme all the drainage from those areas would pass through the Onehunga sewer, and be discharged into the Manuka u Harbour. Members of the board questioned whether the Onehunga sewer was large enough to cope with the increased flow, but the chairman explained that the suggestion was that Ellerslie and One Tree Hill should pay a lump sum for the perpetual right of using the Onehunga sewer, and that this sum would be used for enlarging the sewer when necessary.
Buildings.—The building inspector reported that since his last report twenty building permits had been issued, their total value amounting to £8,605 10/. Since the first of July last, the total value of building permits issued amounts to £57,781, including fifty-one for new dwellings. Traffic—The traffic inspector recommended that "silent policemen" should be installed at several of the busiest corners, as the practice of cutting corners has resulted in many accidents, a number of which have proved fatal. He reported that prosecutions last month yielded £12 10/ Great South Road.—Messrs. Dobbie and Mcintosh were appointed the board's delegates to a committee which has been formed for the object of beautifying the Great South Road. A letter from Mr. G. W. Hutchinson, the secretary, pointed out that the Great South Road formed one of. the main entrances to the city, and it was important, in view of the large number of motor tourists that come from the south, that the road should be made as attractive as possible. Tenders.—A tender of £548 from Messrs. McLarten Bros, for the curbing and channelling of Green Lane and Pukcnui Road was accepted. Classification of Roads.—A protest against the proposed classification of roads was contained in a letter from the Auckland and Suburban Carriers' Association. Ihe association declared that such a scheme would greatly hamper the carriage of heavy goods, such as building material, and suggested that a conference between the chairman of the board and the secretary of the association might lead to an equitable compromise. This was agreed
