LOCAL BODIES.
NEWMARKET. The Newmarket Borough Council met last night, the Deputy Mayor, Mr. 6. E. Smerdon, taking the chair in the absence in Wellington on muncipal business of the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson. Dangerous Goods Licenses.—Suggestions to increase the license fees on the sale of dangerous goods have been received. The chief inspector of explosives wrote, saying that several of the local authorities in the Auckland district were in favour of adopting the scale of charges agreed upon by the' Auckland City Council. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee, with power to act. Outhwaite Park.—The foreman of works reported that work on Outhwaite Park was proceeding slowly as the weather permitted. Tree Planting.—The foreman of works reported that twenty-five jacaranda trees had been planted in Sarawia Street. Seven trees have been protected with wirenetting. This completes the programme outlined for the present year. Fife Plugs.—Alterations to fire plugs throughout the . borough have been suspended. One hundred and seventy plugs have been altered to conform with those in the city area, leaving 72 yet to be altered. The work is expected to be completed in a week's time.
