FLOOD PROTECTION.
MANAWATU SCHEME EXPLAINED.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondeat.)
PALMERSTON N., this day.
Following the report of a commission set up recently to allocate the cost of its big flood protection scheme, the Manawatu Oroua River Board made an application to the Government for a substantial subsidy. At the same time arrangements were made for the Minister of Public Works to inspect the areas affected.
Yesterday the Hon. K. S. William;, accompanied bv Mr. J. Linklater, MP., and Mr. W. H. Tield, MP., met the board members at Shannon, who conducted them over an area from Shannon to Rangiotu. The time at the disposal of the party was not sufficient to enable them to inspect the Kairanga and Kopane areas. Details of the scheme were explained to the Minister, who agreed to endeavour to make a further inspection, possibly with tho Ministers of Lands and of Agriculture.
