KNOCKED A MAN OUT.

BUT NOT IN THE RING. EX-BOXER FINED. ißy Telegraph — Own Correspondent.) WAIHI. this day. William Rudd, formerly well known in Australia and New Zealand as a boxer, was charged to-day with assault and with using obscene language on June 3. Senior Sergeant McLean said a fracas occurred in Seddon Street in the evening after a football match between Waihi and Morrinsville. Evidence would show that Rudd struck Norman J. Thomson on the jaw, knocking him out for nearly half an hour.

Kessel Grigsbury, motor mechanic, of Morrinsville, said he saw Rudd strike Thomson. He was cross-examined about the number of drinks he had had during the day.

Evidence was also given bv Joseph Pretty, W. M. Teller and Thomson.

The defence was a general denial of the charges. The magistrate said the evidence of Grisgsbury and Pretty might be regarded with some doubt, on account of the drinking which had. occurred, but it was corroborated by an independent witness, Telfer.

Rudd was fined £3 for assaulting Thomson, £2 for assaulting Grigsbury and £3 and costs for using obscene language.
