RECORD BROADBHX HANDED.
AT CATALINA ISLAND.
The world's record black marline swordfish wag that caught at Whangafoa in February, 1926, by Captain Mitchell, of the United States. It weighed 9761b.
Up till recently the New Zealand record hroadbill swordfish was taken at the Bay of Islands by Mr. F. K. Burnhain, of America. It weighed 4421b. This record has now been eclipsed by Mr. G. C. Thomas, who, at Catalina Island, California, on June 23 last, caught a broadbill weighing 5731b. The fish fought for five hours and five minutes before it was In 1925 Mr. F. A. Gillespie, of Los Angeles, also fishing at Catalina Island, caught a broadbill weighing 5711b. All these fish were caught on rod and line.
During the season 1926-27 two trophies of 25 guineas each were presented for competition in the Bay of Islands by Colonel Allen Bell, M.P., for the heaviest swordflsh or mako shark caught between Cape Te Reinga and Whangarei. Mr. A..Hi Long, Mangonui, county chairman, also presented a handsome silver cup. One of Colonel Bell's trophies was won Mr. Ross Martin, of Auckland, with a "lack marl in caught at Cape Brett weighing 7501b. The other (also Mr. Long's cup) was won by Captain L. D. Mitchell, of America.
