ROYAL MINT TAKES THE
HANDICAP.
HUNT STEEPLES TO HANDY,
HUIKAI WIN'S THE OPEN SPRINT.

MARTON, Friday.
The official opening of the Marton Jockey Club's new racecourse was performed by Mr. W. S. Glenn, MP., today, when the club commenced its spring fixture in ideal weather. There was a fair attendance, but the course was slow after prolonged rain. The totalisator handled £16,580, against £17,339 on the corresponding day last year when the meeting was held on the Feilding course. Opening Event. Aropeta, Mussie, Royal Black, Fee Simple and Gold Cure failed to parade for the Trial Plate, with which proceedings commenced. The public went for Vigilance, but he was only a little better supported than Aro De val, while Wild Pigeon and Cione were next fancied. Helotis was quickly in front, while Cione was slow to move and lost a good deal of ground. Across the top, Helotis was attended by Tanagra, Blimp, Taurimu and Vigilance. Entering the straight Tanagra was just showing the way to Helotis, Blimp, Aro De Val and Wild Pigeon, who ran out wide. Blimp then shot to the front and had no difficulty in getting the decision by three lengths Tanagra, who beat Aro De Val by two lengths. ' Wild Pigeon, Plane, Vigilance, Maui, Komak and Helotis were next. The Favourite Beaten. Eight contested the first Hack Hurdles. Peneus was favourite, about £200 better backed than Peshwa, while Jovial was as well supported as the latter. Miss Potoa went away in the lead, but was soon joined by Ramblin' Kid and Break o' Day. Passing the stands Ramblin' Kid was in charge from Miss Potoa, Jovial, Break o' Day, Peshwa, Peneus and Hyama. Along the back Miss Potoa retired and Ramblin' Kid was joined by Jovial. Ramblin' Kid made a faulty jump half-a-mile from home and Jovial led into the straight from Peshwa, Peneus and Ramblin' Kid, who was well back. Once over the last jump Peshwa went on to win by a length from Jovial, who beat Peneus by three lengths. Taitaiata was fourth with Ramblin' Kid and Break o' Day next. Closefire Wins. | Teri, Great Day, Troilus and San Pedro were defections from the Spring Hack Handicap. Boy was just £5 better backed than Grand National, while Closefire. was also well supported. Boy and Red Comet led out of the straight from Grand National, The Curragh and Tintoretto. Red Comet was about a dozen lengths clear as they raced along the back from The Curragh, Boy, Tintoretto, Grand National, Koauau, Closefire and Radiate. The field closed up on Red Comet ar they neared the far turn, Boy, Closefire and l&jitoretto being handy.;, Onee in lina for the judge, Red Comet was done with. Closefire ran to the front to win by two lengths from Boy, who beat the fast finishing Radiate by a similar distance. Tintoretto, Koauau, Red Comet and Grand National were next. The Big Event. Te Monanui, Mint Leaf, Vivo and Killoch failed to parade for the Marton Handicap. Nukumai was about . £70 better backed than Alloway, while Royal Mint also had friends. Star Area led past the stands from Starboard Light, Alloway, Royal Mint, Tresham, j Imperial Spark, Mount Marta,. Tame Fox and Nukumai. Along the back Starboard Light opened up a big break on the field, his nearest attendants being Mount Marta, Star Area, Nukumai, Royal Mint, Alloway, Imperial Spark, Tresham and Tame Fox. The field had closed upon Starboard Light as they came across the top, Nukumai being second, with Mount Marta, Royal Mint and Alloway next. Nukumai and Royal Mint were first to turn for home from Alloway, Mount Marta and Tame Fox. Royal Mint then drew out and won by three lengths from Nukumai, who beat Tresham by a length. Tame Fox, Alloway, Mount Marta, Starboard Light, Imperial Spark and Star Area were next. !
Handy all the Way. Banjuke and Handy were best supported for the Hunt Cup Steeplechase, there being only about £25 between the pair when the machine closed, with Oneroa next in request. Risk fell at the first, and Buckeye at the second jump. Handy was in charge when they passed the stands, with Oneroa, Banjuke, Birdie, Birkenose and Two Up next. Rayo ran off at the second fence of the double. When they came around again, Handy, Banjuke, Oneroa and Birkenose were close together, the others having no chance. Handy and Banjuke drew out along the back, with Oneroa next. Handy took charge before the top was reached, and won easily. by four lengths from Banjuke, who beat Oneroa by fifteen lengths. Birkenose was the only other to pass the post. Close Fnish. The scratching pen was used freely in the Electric Handicap, nine going to the post. Te Kawana was first choice, being over £120 better supported than Lady Cynthia, while Kalos was next fancied. Bank Note was in front when the field settled down, with Miss Mercia, Volplane, Chips and Te Kawana next. Bank Note led across the top from Duke Abbey, Miss Mercia, Lady Cynthia, Chips and Volplane. Bank Note "was in front as they turned for home, with Miss Mercia, Te Kawana, Volplane and Chipfe following. Half way down Miss Mercia took charge, and Volplane also came fast. A great finish saw Miss Mercia get the decision by a head from Volplane, who beat Bank Note by ,a similar margin. Te Kawana was fourth, with Kalos, Duke Abbey and Wanderlust next. The Sprinters. Beaumont was first fancy for the Railway Handicap, being about £30 better backed than Inner Harbour, but there was also support for Miss Hupana and In the Shade. When the field settled down Kiosk was in charge from Inner Harbour, Beaumont, Huikai, Hipo, Le Choucas and Miss Hupana. Kiosk and Huikai led across the top and into the straight from Beaumont, Hipo, Inner Harbour and Orchid. In the run to the judge Huikai won by three-quarters of a length from Beaumont, who beat Hipo by a similar dstance. Royal Land, Miss -Hupana, Cohesion, Kiosk and In the Shade were next.
Day's Sport Concluded. The programme concluded with the Tutaenui Handicap, for which Boy, Te Kawana, Tanagra and Gourmet were scratched. Rarakau was just a bit better backed than Anolo, with Bronstell next in request. Archon made the early running, and along the back was attended by Mandarine, Anolo, Rarakau and Bronstell. Archon was first into the straight from Mandarine, Rarakau and Anolo. The last-named then came through and won by a length and a-half from Butterscotch, who beat Mister Gamp by a similar distance.
