Rainblin' Kid went well in the Hurdles at Marton yesterday until about half-a-mile from home, when he hit an obstacle and lost his position.
Peneus never got nearer than third in the Hurdles at Marton yesterday. He was being hard ridden half-a-mile from home, but could make no impression on Peshawa and Jovial
Zealite is the nam© registered for a two-year-old gelding by Valkynan from Queen Abbey. A sister to Tinokoa (by Quin Abbey —Tinopaj) has had the name Tinotika bestowed on her.
C. Nor grove has put Kahakura into work again at Ellerslie. The Catmint threeyearold is in nice condition, and has settled down quietly to work, but it may be some time yet before he is likely to race.
Eulalie, who displayed a lot of brilliancy as a two-year-old last season, will probaly contest the Dunedin Guineas. It will be interesting to see how this speedy filly shapes over a mile course— the distance of the above event.
P. Conway put Pompey into active woTk again during the week. The Lucullus gelding, who only contested three races last season, has done a fair amount of road work, and it will not be long before he is ready to race again.
Phidias, who annexed the Novice Stakes at the Kadina Race meeting (S.A.) on August 20, is a three-year-old brother to Oration. The chestnut son of Ciceroi and Elsie Hart is reported to have won his race in convincing fashion.
Automne has been working well since he raced at the Pakuranga meeting. The brown gelding should be hard to beat in sprint Tacea during the spring, for he i« ! very forward, at the present time and is' likely to perform better when the going is firmer.
The Limond —Pennon three-year-old, Damaris, ia reported to be doing well at Wanganui. The half-sister to Motleywill most likely be Mr. G. M. Currie's representative in the Wanganui Guineas, to be decided next week at the river town.
The Heather Mixture gelding, Haerera, who was spelled for a short term a few •weeks ago, is now working in good style at Ellerslie. It is to be hoped that he continues to train on all right, for he is £. speedy gelding and one likely to win races when at his best.
King of the Air jumped four hurdle? in good style at Ellerslie one morning during the week. The Quia Abbey gelding has previously given several promising displays over the battens, and will probably be found contesting hurdle races later on in the season.
The Fox has been doing well on the /•work allotted him by tTainer J. Lambess, •and he ia furnishing into a good-looking 'ftliree - yea r - old. Like the rest of the { 'Ellerslie trained horses, he has not been r-'doing any fast work, owing to the bad 'Estate of the going at headquarters.
I R. E. Brown's three-year-old Challenge in regular work again at headquarters. cThe Mountain Knight—Camp Guardian .'filly' is very big in condition at present, . and will not be ready to race for some 5" time. She was started twice as a two-year-old during the latter part of last season. "A. Valour, the Valkvrian filly in W. sfTozer's stable, lias done well since com- & peting in the two-year-old parade at the pPakuranga meeting. She has thickened out quite a lot of late, while she is also very freely on the track, and promises to develop Into a speedy youngster. Luxurious, who has been rather an unlucky gelding in the past, is again working in good style at headquarters. He has not been raced since being gelded a few months back, and it will be interesting to see if that operation permits him displaying improved form in ' the future. Lady Cynthia, who won the Waitohn Hack Handicap and finished second in , the Tainui Hack race at the Otaki winter meeting, is entered for the Harris Hack Cup at the DanneviAe spring fixture. She is a six-year-old mare by Cvntoi—Meroz, who is expected to develop into a good stake-winner this season.
Sea Comet is being treated to a short spell since returning from the Taranaki Hunt meeting. The chestnut son of Day Comet has performed very consistently of late, and has not been out of place in his last four starts. He is probably in better condition at the present time than he has even been, and should be eapafre of winning among the hunters' class before the season is finished.
E. Popo, the well-known Ellerslie trainer, who has been located at headquarters for a long term, has decided to remove to Takanini next week. He has acquired a property in the above district and the new stables that he is having erected thereon will be completed in the course of a few days. It ia sincerely hoped tlja.t the change of. quarters will a'so mean a change of luck for tus ppinslnVi'ig trainer.
Beaumont ran a good race at Marton yesterday and his turn should not be far off.
Grand National showed up for a while at Marton yesterday but finished with the last bunch. The distance, eight and a-half furlongs, seemed to be beyond him. . _ '
Kiosk-was the leader for the greater part of the way in the Railway Handicap at Marton yesterday, on drier ground he will be much harder to beat.
Imperial Spark '.had his first race since returning from Australia, but. was always back and. finished in the ruck. He will need some racing to get into form.
In the Shade and Le Choucas were hardly sighted in the Railway Handicap at Marton yesterday. They certainly were never in a winning position at any stage.
Red Comet set a merry pace in the Spring Hack Handicap at Marton yesterday, till the straight was reached. He then dropped back, and was among the last to finish.
Bank Note ran a good race in the Electric Handicap at Marton yesterday, leading practically all the way, and just being beaten into third position at the finish, by Miss Mercia and Volplane.
Wild Pigeon ran very wide at the turn in the Trial Plate at Marton yesterday and that did not enhance her chances. She was well up at the turn and finished fourth. On a firmer track she should do better.
Helotis, by Lucullus—Heldanois, showed a lot of pace in the Trial Plate at Marton yesterday, leading till well into the straight. With a few more races a win should not be far away for him. '
Old Tintoretto ran a good race in the Spring Hack Handicap at Marton yesterday, being well-up at the turn and finishing fourth. He is owned by F. Davis, the Woodville trainer, and apparently is not done yet.
Star Stranger was as big as a prime steer at Marton yesterday, and raced accordingly. J. H. Jefferd has plenty of condition to work off to get him ready. However, Star Stranger appeared to be very well in himself.
Volplane is coming on, and should win shortly. He finished, very fast at Marton yesterday, but failed to reach Miss Mercia by a head. He is well-bred, being by Warplane from the New Zealand Cup winder Sinapis.
Tanagra has shown promising form recently,, and he finished second in the Trial Plate at Marton yesterday. He is by Polydamon from Pauleen, and therefore a half-brother to Gazique, who was a good performer in his day.
Radiate was a long way back in the early Btages of the Spring Hack Handicap at Marton yesterday, but was finishing a£, a gjeat rate in third position. If he had got a gobd position early fc* would $jave been hard'tb beat.
Handy won the Hunt Club Steeples at'- Marton from end to end. Banjuke was up with him along the back the last time, but was out-stayed and outjumped. Handy is a beautiful jumper, and never made a mistake throughout.
Aro de Val was well supported at Marton yesterday. He was not well placed in the early stages, but finished nicely in third position. With a little more experience (for this was only his second race) the half-brother to Degage will be hard to beat.
Auolo won well at the Wellington meeting, but at Taranaki last Saturday he got beaten. It is stated that on that occasion he did not get away too well. A Marton yesterday he was never further back than fourth, and won very easily at the finish.
Cione, by Catmint—Hyades, was saddled up at Marton yesterday for the Trial Plate. She is owned by Mr. A. B. Williams, and was ridden by R. Reed. Cione did not leave the mark properly, and was last all the way. She is a halfsister to Phaola, but is very green at present!
Miss Mercia is a beautiful looking filly, and she should win good races in New Zealand. Yesterday the Australianbred three-year-old won tlje Electric Handicap at Marton, and finished a most game manner. She was in front fifty yards from the post and stayed there. Slump, who won the Trial Plate at Marton yesterday, is by Gasbag from Marfaux, and is trained by G. New at Awapuni. He was always in a handy position, and taking charge in the straight, won in easy fashion. He is a most promising sort, and is the first of the Gasbags to win.
Boy is among those entered for the, New Zealand Cup. He was a starter in the Spring Hack Handicap at Marton yesterday, and finished second to Closefire. The going seemed to be against him, but all the same he is a nice mover. He is one of the Kilbroney tribe, and is worth keeping in mind for minor events.
Jovial was brought up from Riccarton for jumping events at Marton and Wanganui. He started in the Hurdles at the former meeting yesterday and ran a great race, only being beaten by a length at the finish. He was very unlucky at Riccarton, and has only got to stand up to capture a stake before he returns.
Royal Mint was ridden a nice race in the Marton Handicap yesterday. He was always well in the bunch, behind Starboard Light (who tried to win practically from end to end), and coming into the straight, Royal Mint went away, to score comfortably. He will have to be considered in the big Spring Handicap this season, for he finished m good style ,and is in great condition.
Nukumai made a bold bid to win the Marton Handicap yesterday, but had to be content with second place. Entering the back stretch, Starboard Light opened up a big break on the field. Nukumai was last, his rider (L .G. Morris) then set out after the leader, and he was second going across the top and was one of the first into the straight. Royal Mint, however, beat him comfortably at the finish. The effort he made in the middle stages apparently took too Mch oat him.
