ROBERTS DEFEATS BRANDER. " *\ E. V. Roberts, New Zealand alnateur champion, beat W. Bfander t>y '500 to 279 in the Auckland amateur championship at the rooms of Billiards, Ltd;, last _ evening. Roberts Started confidently, aad--strik-ing- well, reached the century mark first but didHnot make any break of note. Branded was only a few points "behind at tiiis x stage. .Roberts improved, and by gopd all-rouiad play - soon . added breaks, of 24, 31 and 33, and gained N a lead. BKs opponent was also playing consistently, making a break of 32; .including some nice cannons. Further, breaks were soon put on by Roberts, Who by this time had a good lead. However, he did not give his Opponent many chances, electing to play safety when the ' prospect of scoring seemed remote. Brander added a break of 20 to his score, but Roberts soon gained the ascendancy, and with ail" unfinished break of 56 ran to points. Roberta played up to his usual, form, proving* too conlistent for Bss opponent, who did not play his usual game. The final scores were:—E. V. Roberts,, 5Qp.
