LATE MR. JOHN HENDERSON.
MEMORIAL SERVICE. A memorial service for the late Mr. John Henderson, ex-Mayor of Devonport, was held in St. Paul's Church, Devonport, last night when there was a verv large congregation, including the Mayor, councillors and staff of the Borough Council, the members of the Fire Brigade and representatives of the Waitemata Chamber of Commerce, Devonport Traders' Association, Hospital Board and the Salvation Army, besides many other bodies and clubs. The service, which was conducted by the Rev. W. Lawson Marsh, M.A., was of a deeply impressive nature. Before the sermon the minister, while the congregation stood, read a minute which had been prepared dealing with the life and work of Mr. Henderson, also some extracts from some of the speeches which the deceased had made while he was Mayor of the borough relating to the welfare of others, which were of a deeply touching nature, especially one reference made when the foundation stone of St. Paul's was being laid in 1916. "It was a fine thing," Mr. Henderson had said "that during the dark days of war while civilisation itself was almost hanging in the balance men were building temples in which to worship God, for without the help of God they could do nothing." The preacher took for his text Job 38 and 1: "The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind." With a pathos and power he spoke of the mysteries and sufferings of human life, and how the problems of Job's time were equally applicable to our own days, much as human sufferings has been alleviated by modern science. Appropriate hymns were sung, including some of Mr. Henderson's favourites, and the Dead March was played.
