The advertising tipsters possibly regarded that as unfair competition. . SOUTH AUSTRALIA'S BIGGEST STAKE. Year hy year the value of the Port Adelaide Cup is growing. It is probable that next year the ambition of the committee to provide a stake of £5000 will be realised. It is only a few years ago that the stake for the cup was £1000, but the club is governed by an enterprising committee, and they havegradually raised the value of the stake, and they -have now decided that for the Cup to bo run at the end of the year, the stake money will be £4500. This is easily the largest stake ever offered for any race in South Australia and there are very few big handicaps in Australia which carry larger prize money, the notable exceptions°bein<r the Melbourne Cup, Gaulfield Cup. Sydney Cup, and the Metropolitan. It is remarkable that so few interstate owners have shown any desire to win the hi" stake at the Port Christmas meetin" but perhaps the increased offering this' year will alter that state of affairs
