SYDNEY'S WEMBLEY.

EXHIBITION IN 1931. A HUGE PROJECT. TO COINCIDE WITH BRIDGE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, June 23

Sydney is to have its own Wembley Exhibition, if a project now in embryo comes to anything. It is proposed that a huge exhibition should be staged here in 1931, with Centennial Park as the site, to coincide with the completion of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is considered that properly run, an Australian counterpart to Wembley should be self- ! supporting, and would give the Common- • wealth almost incalculable advertise- | ment throughout the world. The British Government, while not officially committing itself, has given the promoters kindly encouragement. The Federal and State Governments have exhibited interest, and Centennial Park, with its vast extent, has been tentatively agreed upon as the best site for the Exhibition. Only two cities in the Commonwealth could house an adventure of the kind— Sydney and Melbourne—and Sydney has been selected because the year of the Exhibition will fit in so well with the completion of the harbour bridge. Centennial Park is centrally situated, and has everything in its favour. It is within easy access of all the suburbs, and as two tramway systems, as well as many motor bus routes skirt its boundaries, there would be the transport necessary to move vast crowds daily. All the initial spadework was completed when the N.S.W. Premier indicated that a portion of Centennial Park would be made available. Cautious analysis of financial estimates has suggested that a truly national exhibition should more than pay its way, and while many of the most intricate problems remain to be solved, it is certain that the project has emerged from the nebulous stage. Promoters consider that the four years intervening will allow little enough time to organise an exposition such as is contemplated. Exhibits not only from all over Australia, but from other countries, are anticipated.
