COOKHOUSE CHEF.
LOST £6CO IN- YEAR,
DISCHARGE TO BE OPPOSED.
"I think you are lucky to get off with that," remarked ill - . G. .N. Morris, Official Assignee in Bankruptcy, when the creditors of Albert Waterman passed a resolution to oppose the bankrupt's discharge. In his schedule, Waterman showed total liabilities of' £013 11/0. The only assets were book debts, £50, estimated not to return anything, and furniture valued at £20. ?•
The bankrupt stated that he was a married man with two children. He took over a cook house at the Public Works Department camp, Bombay. He was guaranteed 40 men. He was asked to open another cook house for 70 men, but the numbers were never there. He had to employ in the second house two men, who received £S per week between them. He asked the Department to close the house for 50 men. It was promised to be done, but the house was kept open another two months, unnecessarily. He lost £100 that two months, and another £50 through bad debts.
In answer to questions, bankrupt said he had not a list of the men who owed him £50. lie could get a list from the Public Works. There were still some goods at the camp. There was security over his furniture for a loan. Mr. Morris read a letter from the Public Works Department stating that there was never a guarantee given as to the number of men who were to be catered for. }[r. Morris said inside six months bankrupt went back £000. Bankrupt explained that he did not get paid when some of the men left the job, and some of the men never earned the money. He could not very well stop the men from having food. Two creditors said they had seen the bankrupt betting on the pound tote at the races. Tn answer to Mr. Morris, bankrupt said he came out square at Easter, lost 2/0 at another meeting, and £4 at another. Mr. Morris said the books appeared to be useless, and bankrupt had not passed all his money through the bank. The meeting aerreed to accept £57 17/7 for the goods at t.lie camp, and it was further decided that the Assignee oppose bankrupt's discharge.
