CHAMPIONS' BEST YEAR.
Discussing the sums won by a horse in one year, an Australian writer, who supports Windbag's claim, says: "Gloaming, for instance, is quickly eliminated from the contest. He fell short of winning even half of the £25,000. But, of course, he missed all the two-year-old classics and never tackled the rich handicaps. In fact, he never once ran in a handicap in all his six years on the turf, and his restriction to w.f.a. events robbed him of the chance of winning the really rich plums of the turf. Thus Gloaming's best year was his first at three years, when he won the A.J.C. Derby and a number of great New Zealand races, whose prizemoney, however, didn't attain to anything like Australian standards. So his best total for anv one season was
£12,170. It was because he went on from three years to nine years winning amounts ranging between £5000 and £8000 each season that he built up his figures to the Australasian record, £43,100. Both Heroic and Eurythmic did better, much better, than Gloaming, though neither was as good. In one of their years they got to £21,000. Heroic's record being some hundreds the better of the two."
