AUSTRALIAN POTATOES.
PROTEST AGAINST IMPORT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) OAMARU, this day. At the Farm School this morning there was a fairly large attendance of potato growers. Mr. Bruce Meek, president of the Provincial Fanners' Union, said Dominion potatoes had !>cen prohibited from Australia owing to an allegation of doubtful veracity, that they were affected by powdery scab. Xow, when the Dominion crops were short, and farmers were likely to obtain a fair price, Australian potatoes were being imported at Auckland, obviously to "bear" the market.
Dr. Coekaync, of the Agricultural Department, said that if Australian potatoes were imported they must be free from disease, and subject to a rigid inspection.
A resolution was passed that the Government be urged to place an embargo on the importation of Australian potatoes, or, failing this, to send an expert to inspect them before their shipment to the Dominion.
