TRADE COMMISSIONERS.
N.Z.'S NEED IN U.S.A.
AN AUSTRALIAN'S OPINION.
BIG MARKET FOR DAIRY EXPORTS.
"I have been travellig backwards and forwards between the Antipodes and the United States for 28 years," eaid Mr. Thomas Hughes, a well-known Sydney business man, to a "Star" representative on the Aorangi yesterday, "and I am more convinced than ever that our principal need is a trade commissioner in every big American city. There is one Australian commissioner in New York, and that is all. New Zealand, like Australia, needs advertising, and the flow of New Zealand and Australian produce into the States should be regular and not spasmodic."
Mr. Hughes said there was a steady and dependable demand, especially in the Pacific Coast States, for N.Z. dairy produce, and only too often was American stuff sold as such. The fact that New Zealand's summer came at the time.of North America's winter conferred a splendid natural advantage, and, with proper organisation, there would be a ready sale for large quantities of New Zealand butter and cheese, from October to April. "The trouble is we don't advertise enough," added Mr. Hughes. "Over in America you will hear a lot about Europe but very little about Australia and New Zealand. Even the islands, Samoa, Fiji and Papeete are better advertised than we are."
