WINTER BOWLING.
MATCHES AND INTERCLUBS.
CARLTON'S TWO VICTORIES,
(By TRUXDLER.)
Quite an enjoyable afternoon was spent on the various preens on Saturday although a sharp shower during th* , morning made tlie prospects look anything but promising at one time.
Mount Kden and Dominion Road preens saw the most interesting play, for both had several interclubs. On the former green the afternoon was notable for the double victory of Carlton, G. R. Hosking getting rather aa easy win in the final of the King's Birthday tournament, vand A. G. Fookes' snatching victory on the post in the weekly challenge for the Edwin stars. The new holders will meet a challenge from C. Little (Grey Lynn) next Saturday, and the next on the list are J. Taylor (Ellerslie), J. Morgan (Devonport), H. C. Clarke (Rocky Xook) and T. S. Bassctt (Onehunga). There are still two important King's Birthday finals to be played. At Devonport the linal between C. A. Elvy and J. Pascoe is fixed for next Saturday, and as both skips are experienced and accomplished players a fine game should result. Xo date is fixed yet for the Dominion Road final, between \Y. Bremner and A. Parsons, two Dominion champion skips, but when ever they play they will do very well if they give the spectators as interesting an exhibition a3 they saw at Onehunga last Thursday, when H. C. Clarke, the Dominion singles champion, defeated M. Walker, the Dominion pairs champion. Visitors Always Win. Carlton's victory in the Mount Eden final emphasises a feature which is attracting some comment, the fact that almost without exception the King's Birthday tournaments were won by visiting teams. The Devonport final is being fought out by two local teams, but that was purely a club tournament, and Grey Lynn was very much in the same position. But in all the tournaments where a strong bid was made for outside patronage, the visitors triumphed over the local teams. The final at Mount Eden was in exactly the same position as those at Mount Albert and Epsom, where a Rocky Nook team put down the local rink in the final, while at Onehunga and Dominion Road the local men did not even get a look in.
There seems to be no remedy for a system which apparently allows the visitors to run away with all the trophies, for it is only natural that visitors will not bother to tackle an outside tournament except with a fairly strong team. The local people, on the other hand, dare not pack a team, for they would at once be accused of pothunting, and the result is that nearly every local team carries one or more passengers, who are invited to play, purely from a sense of loyalty to the club and the individual. In the days when the entry fees were divided up amongst the winners, this practically amounted to the local people putting tip a nice little sweepstake for the visitors to fight over, but now that there are merely trophies of no great value, perhaps it does not matter very much if these are all annexed by the visitors. The probability of an outside team winning will always make the tournament more interesting by attracting a good entry of visitors, and the local peopled are apparently content to look at their entry fee as merely an indirect and pleasant contribution to the general funds of their own club. And so everybody is satisfied, even those who know from the first that they have no possible chance of winning.
Two new winter tournaments are to commence this week. Rocky Xook holdnig a one-day flutter on Wednesday, and Dominion Road commencing a two-dav tournament on Saturday, to be continued on the following Saturday. Both are accepting team entries. " The annual meeting of the Dominion Road Club will be held next Saturday evening. The holders of the Denison Pins warded off their fourth challenge last Wednesday the score being: West End (holders) R- G Cox, F. Wise. C. E. Hardlev, Irving Clark, 26, v. Auckland (challengers) E J.
