FREE AMBULANCE SERVICE.

WELLINGTONS EXPERIMENT.

IN OPERATION SHORTLY

(By Telegraph— Own Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, this day

The free ambulance scheme will be in operation in the near future. The executive consists of the mayors or chairmen of all the local bodies concerned, together with the president* of the Trades and Labour Council, the St. John Ambulance and the Red Cross Society. An amount of approximately £3000 is in hand.

The Mayor of Wellington, Mr. G. A. Troup, stated that it was not intended to ask for public subscriptions until it had been demonstrated what service the ambulance can give to the public. It had now beep realised that it would be necessary to appoint a full-time superintendent, one thoroughly experienced and fully qualified in the work, and holding a certificate of the St. John Ambulance Association.
