"GIMME THE BAG."
DARING ATTEMPTED HOLD-UP
IN CITY HOTEL.
CASHIER'S PRESENCE OF MIND
Pointing a revolver at the lady occupant of the office of the Waverley Hotel, about 7 o'clock last night, a masked man made the request, "Gimme the bag."
At this period of the evening the head cashier is usually totalling and placing away in the strong room the receipts for the day—no inconsiderable sum.
Money was not to be acquired s>o easily, however, for the cashier, who was alone in the office at the time, promptly slipped to one sidi* out of the line of gunfire and rang the house bell. This was enough for the intruder, who made <)tf without any further effort to get into funds. This would not have ber.n iin easy tnuttor unless the cash had been given up at the mome*nt it was demanded, for the office is difficult of ingress, with a somewhat small window
through whieli the business is dene. This also accounts for the lady cashier being unable to get out in time to gi\e an effectual alarm.
The stranger wore a white handkerchief over the lower part of his face and fairly gasped out his demand for the 'bag," showing to an extent that he was Hiore nervous than the lady in the office.
