MINING NEWS.
SOUTHERN MINES. The directors of the Southern Minos Development Corporation, in a quarterly report to shareholders, state 'that during the past quarter the work in the Hercules mine had heon mainly on the lines of opening up a lower surface level 100 feet under the present workings. This will not oniy add considerably to the ore reserves, but supply complete ventilation and also furnish a much shorter route for the trunsit of ore to the battery and effect a saving of 3/ per ton. Men are engaged , rising on a fourfoot reef, and revenue from that work through intermittent battery returns has eased the financial strain and given encouragement to push on with the enterprise The face of the main drive is being pushed into virgin country, the Government paying pound for pound subsidy toward this particular exploratory work. A very promising four-foot track is being developed inside the ore channel, containing gold-bearing quartz boulders. In the Murray Creek mine the directors have a portion of the surface rights from n party of tributers, who wore working on a reef containing values ns high us £4 per ton. Mr. Kenuerley, mine manager, has been engaged opening up the work on this property with the very best results. The Murchison Oil Company's bore on the adjoining property has been resumed. At 2000 down the bore gives evidence of the presence of oil. Mr. J. A. Spencer, geologist, has been engaged in securing the areas held by the Southern Mines Development Corporation and is to start on the Blackwater on April 2.
