On beijiir convicted on two charges of ! assault at Lyttelton yesterday, Edgar j Woodlield, boatswain on the steamer Xainui, aud_ formerJy a naval oliicer am! J welter-weight boxing champion of the j Xavy, made the remark to the magistrate that it was the first time he had been in Court and that April 13 must lie his unlucky day. He also said he had found the Court different from what lie ; expected. Everybody seemed happy and I jolly, and he did not think he would be Iso anxious to dodge police courts n i future. Woodfield pleaded not guilty to p. I charge of assaulting Albert Edward ■ Searle. an ex-naval petty officer, and , John Moore Cassof. Searle said he spoke i to- another seams n who was under the influence of liquor, asking him to be quiet, and Woodfield then struck witness. One seaman gave evidence that ou the day of the assault the men, including the bosun, had had a •"tarpaulin muster" to bring liquor. A fine of 30/ on each charge was in ! flictcd.
