IMPORTATION OF TIMBER.
Evidence to be placed before the Tariff Commission in respect to the importation of foreign timber and the effect upon the future of New Zealand's forests was the principal Business considered at a meeting of the New Zealand Forestry League at Wellington last week. Mr. A. L. Hunt presided. The position was regarded as somewhat serious, owing to | the wastage of good timber by saw- j millers, who could not find a profitable \ market in New Zealand. Alarm was expressed at the rapid depletion of i forests by the present practice of scouring for heart timber and throwing on the slab heap a big proportion of the log. or leaving sappy logs ill the bush to' rot.
