Probably the one line which causes the housewife most concern to-day is eggs for as everyone knows if you have a few iresh eggs you are well on to a satisfying meal. * But eggs at 3/6 a dozen! Yes! That rs the retail price over the counter to-day Preserved—quite satisfactory for cooking purposes—are 1/ a dozen less. Butter must be considered reasonable at 1/4 to 1/6 per lb for best factory and 1/ for pastry. Cheese is 1/2 to 1/4 a pound Bacon rashers are 1/2 to 1/6 a pound and ham rashers 1/8. Vegetables. Many vegetable lines are cheap just now. For a shilling you enn get 101b of potatoes, 121b of onions, 121b of swedes or 81b of kumaras. These are cash and carry prices at most of the shops. Carrots and beet are a penny a small bundle. Parsnips and turnips l%d. Cabbages are from 3d for medium to 6d for those with the big hearts, and lettuce 2d to 3d. Rhubarb: Plenty at 3d a bundle. Fruit. The shops have a fine variety of fruit just now. Dessert apples cost from 3d to 4d per lb and cookers 3d. Prime dessert pears are 4d and cookers 3d. Tomatoes are a shade dearer. Fivepcnce for outdoor and a penny more for hothouse. American oranges are three a shilling and Island 2d each. Bananas 4d to 5d per lb. Meat. Beef has just been reduced in price, and main cuts now are priced as follows: — Sirloin 8d per lb, ribs sd, rolled roasts sd. beef steak sd, rump steak lid, corned beef 6d. Beef sausages are sixpence a lb and pork Bd. Mutton prices remain unchanged. A leg costs 8d per lb, shoulder 6d, loin od, and chops lOd. Pork.—Leg lid, loin 1/, chops 1/1. veal fillets are 10d lb and cutlete lid. Legs of lamb can be bought at 1/2 per lb. Forequarters at 7d, loins at lOd, hindquarters 1/, and chops 1/. Fish. This is the one time of the yp.-ir when fish is in keenest demand, and it so happens that the supply of fresh lines is somewhat limited.
