'FLU AND MUMPS.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 22.

A serious epidemic of influenza and mumps has developed on the American army transport Chateau Thierrv, which was conveying 900 men to China.

Five patients have already died and G9 >thers are seriously ill.

The vessel is steaming at full speed to San Francisco, where army ambulances are in waiting to transfer the sufferers to the local hospital.

In addition to the troopers the transport has on board 125 officeis and their wives; also 13 members of Congress who were en route to China to investigate the situation there.

Most of the cases of illness recurred while the vessel was in Central American waters. It was impossible for her to stop at any port owing to the lack of adequate hospital facilities, "■"'
