ASTRIDE THE RAILWAY
SHANGHAI, March 22.
The main army of the Cantonese, which has recently been concentrating an attack on Nanking, about 175 miles north-west of Shanghai, is now astride the Shanghai-Nanking railway, 30 miles north of Shanghai. This has cut off that portion of the anti-Red army which refused to join the South and preferred to evacuate Shanghai. e I
The force in question comprises "White" Russians and the Shantung army. Many of the latter have deserted and returned to Shanghai. They are now sheltering in the foreign settlements. The evacuation of foreign women and children from Nanking was commenced at daylight to-day. Latest reports indicate that the Cantonese army is continuing its victorious advance along the Shanghai-Nanking railway and is sweeping toward the Shanghai and Nanking border to complete the capture of all the territory south of the Yangtse-kiang River.
