SETTLEMENT SHELLED
British Repulse Attack of
Northerners.
NO CASUALTIES REPORTED

SHANGHAI, March 22.
Isorthcrn troops, estimated to number several hundreds, broke through the barriers and the cordon in the northern section of the international settlement.
They rushed alleways, which were weakly held by the British.
They had previously attempted to break through but were repulsed by the Durhams.
So far no British casualties are re ported.
Several shells dropped in the internationaJ settlement in the afternoon and struck the police station, the American bank on the Nanking Road, an apartment house in the centre of the settlement and various small buildings.
A second conflagration started In the native quarter, which was bigger than yesterday's.
Roof tops of the settlement buildings are crowded with thousands watchin" the flames.
Dense columns of smoke envelop the settlement and the fire is spreading rapidly. *
Thousands of panic-stricken natives are storming the barricades, fleeing from the flames.
It is believed that the shells were directed at the crowds on the roof tops.
