INTER-ISLAND 'PHONE.
■ IN OPERATION NEXT JUNE. AMPLIFIERS TOBE INSTALLED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. It is expected that the telephone system between the North and South Islands will be in full working order by June. Alhough the main connecting length across the strait already has been made it is possible to talk by telephone only to the northernmost portions of the South Island as the equipment is not complete. A repeating apparatus is necessarv at each end of the cable, in order" to amplify speech and ensure distinct hearing over long distances. This apparatus has now arrived in New Zealand, and is being installed at Wellington and at Seddon, Marlborough. The main telephone line will be strengthened between Seddon and Christchurch.
