Alexander Shaw delivered his presidential address at the jubilee meeting of the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom. He said shipowner* had seen with «oa« interest the actual operation in the shipping world of those theories of public ownership and control which were so widely advocated to-day. "We challenge those who urge these theories to point to one corner of the earth where Socialism has ever been applied in practice to shipping, under normal conditions, without a sterilising effect." said the speaker.
"Socialism results in expense, piles up losses and adds to the burden which the taxpayers have to carry.
"The failure of Socialism at »ot in written in flaring letters so that all who are not blinded by prejudice may discern the unwisdom of attempting to nationalise a bwinctf which by its very nature is international; a business moreover which depends perhaps more than any other upon the quick ingenuity of private effort."
