The Auckland City Council met last evening, the Mayor '(Mr. Geo. Baildon), presiding.
Buy New Zealand-made Goods.—Permission was granted to the New Zea-land-niade Preference League to have the words "Buy New Zealand-made Goods" printed on the back of tram tickets. The league offered to reciprocate by giving publicity in a monthly magazine for school children to the council's "places to visit" round Auckland. It was made a condition that the league should pay the extra cost of the printing. Methodist College Chapel.—Permission was granted for the removal of the Methodist Chapel, Grafton Road, 150 feet from its present position along Carlton Gore Road. The trustees stated that it was the ultimate intention to remove the church to make room for a new chapel in connection with the college. New Road at Grey Lynn.—The council adopted a report from the citv engineer suggesting that a letter should be sent to the Director of Town Planning, Wellington, requesting that the necessary provision should be given for laying off a proposed new road from Browning Street, Grey Lynn, with a width of 38ft Bin in lieu of 40ft. Leys Institute.—The Leys Institute committee reported that additions of 227 volumes tfere made to the collection at the Leys Institute in December and January, 129 volumes of general literature and 27 novels being donated bv Mr. W. Cecil Leys. A total of 2180 books were issued for home reading, a daily average of 45, an increase of 107 compared with the same period of last year.
Street Repairs in 4 City.—The engineer was authorised to carrv out street repairs to the road paving in Customs Street West, and in Fanshawe Street from Albert Street to the existing concrete paving, concrete to be used. The city engineer reported that would set in two davs.
it was proposed to' lav G33 yards of concrete, and the kind of concrete used A New Church.—Permission was granted to Mr. J. D. Stephens to erect a church hall in Faulder's Avenue, Grev Lynn, for the St. Columbia Parish Vestry, the building to be in wood and iron.
Congestion at Railway Station.—Complaint was received from the District Traffic Manager of Railways of congestion at the Auckland railway station through the parking of cars in the small lane off Quay Street East. The chief traffic inspector reported that the congestion caused inconvenience to both the Railway Department ajid the Postal Department, and on his recommendation it was decided to prohibit parking of cars in that area.
Filtration Plant Debentures.—Upon the recommendation of the Finance and Legal Committee, it was decided to dispose of £70,000 filtration plant loan debentures of £100 each, bearing per cent interest, and to allow & brokerage of half per cent.
_ Parnell Baths.—The report from the city engineer (previously published), recommending that access for boats should be provided at Judge's Bay by means of a channel in the railway embankment was adopted, and the engineer was instructed to prepare detailed estimates for the concreting of the floor of Parnell baths.
Point Chevalier Park.—A report from the city engineer was adopted, which recommended early consideration of the development of an area of 12 acres in Walker Road, Point Chevalier, recently acquired for the purposes of a park. St. Helier's Bay Buses.—lt was decided to adopt a recommendation from the Tramways Committee not to purchase the motor bus service of Mr. L. J. Keyes, whose buses operate between the city and Kohimarama and St. Helier's Bav.
Street Collection.—An application from the Returned Soldiers' Association for permission to hold "Poppy Day" on April 22. was granted. An* application from the Victoria League for a "Daffodil Day" was declined, and an application from the Auckland Play Association to make a street collection was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee. Land on Watersheds.—The Waterworks Committee reported that an area of 2584 acres to the west of the Huia Valley, owned by Mrs. F. J. Rayner. was not required at present for water purposes, and the matter was referred to the special committee set up in connection with the application of land for a national park. Objection was made by the Waitemata County Council to the City Council acquiring an area of 36* acres at Pukematakeo. It was decided to adhere to a previous decision to acquire this area of land. The special committee was instructed, on thr motion of Mr. C. F. Bennett, to repor at the next meeting on the propose.! purchase of the Piha Block, and other land adjacent.
Traffic Routes.—The suggested connection of Day Street with Howe Street, to provide a by-pass for traffic from Pitt Street to Ponsonby, also the erection of a bridge across the Arch Hill gully, was referred to a committee of the whole council. The city engineer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of the proposed bridge. Street Telephones.—The telegraph engineer advised that two public telephone boxes would be installed in Upper Symonds Street, and one at the corner of Old Mill Road and Garnet Road.
