March 30 31 or April 27. 2S—Manawatu Te Monanui ran well for about a mile and three furlongs in the Wanganui Cup, but then faded out and finished near last.

Little River made a faulty jump about five furlongs from home in the W estmere Hurdles at Wanganui yesterday and lost his position. He might have been in the money only for that.

Noyar ran well for over a mile and ahalf in the Cup, being one of the leading division till the entrance to the straight. He finished fourth, and can be expected to get on the winning list again before long. He won the Manawatu Cup at Christmas time. Ruanui was very smart to leave the barrier in the Juvenile Handicap at Wanganui yesterday, and in the early stages it looked as though he would not be headed. However, Melissa had him before the straight was reached, and beat him home. Whenuanui was not ridden a very good race in the Pc. > Hack Handicap at Wanganui yesterday. If Barrv had kept him on the outside of the fieid instead of running him up among the others, he have been very hard i.o beat. This is his first defeat in his last five starts. Clarinda acted as pacemaker for the greater portion of the way in the Wanganui Cup yesterua v. She was jn charge after about a couple of furlongs had been covered, and —as only headed at the entrance to the straight. Her sister (Piuthair) and Rapine were the only ones to beat hA- at the finish. The Hawk put in a great run in the Flying Handicap when he got clear in the straight, and just failed to beat Benzora for second place. If started in the Jackson Stakes to-morrow, he will be one of the prime fancies, and on his effort yesterday will give the others something to do to head him off.

Gold Peak, who scored in the Westmere Hurdles at Wanganui, had not won since the Taranaki meeting in December, 1925. On that occasion he annexed the Tarata Hack Hi. .-dies from San Fera and others. He showed a lot of pace yesterday, and was- in front for most of the way, while he jumped well. Civility is a good mare, and she won the Flying Handicap in good style at Wanganui. She was in a handy position as the field turned for home, and soon had the measure of Benzora. If the Hawk got a good run he would have troubled her, for he was giving her a good start when they straightened up for home. First Acre evidently thrives on racing, for he has probably done more this season than any other horse in New Zealand. He has started on thirty occasions for seven wins, two seconds, and nine thirds, which is not a bad record. His latest victory was yesterday, when, ridden by Roy Reed, he accounted for the Stewards' Handicap at Wanganui. Damaris, the half-sister to Lysandcr and Motley, is very green yet, but she has a lot of pace, and when the autumn racing is a little further advanced, can be expected to win. She is not smart enough at the barrier, but when she settles down, knows how to gallop. Yesterday at Wanganui she finished third in the Juvenile Handicap. Damaris is OTned by Mr. G. M. Currie. Benzora has been running well lately. He showed form at Wellington, and later won at Hawera. Going on to Taranaki he added another race to iiis credit, and at . anganui yesterday was only just beaten by Civility in the Flying Handicap. Benzora at one stage looked as though he was going to make a runaway race of it. He should not be any the worse for that effort when he is next seen out.

Melissa has Deeu a most consistent youngster this season. She has started on half-a-dozen occasions, and has never been out of the money, her tally being two firsts and four seconds. Yesterday at Wanganui she soon settled Ruanui, the favourite, in the Juvenile Handicap, when it came to the business end. Melissa, though she has been unlucky, is a very speedy two-year-old, who is improving all the time.

Piuthair has been a great proposition this season. She won the Pea roe Handicap at Wellington, and followed that by annexing the Metropolitan Handicap at Kiccarton. At the recent Wellington meeting Piuthair was just beaten in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap by Star Stranger, in time that bettered the Australasian record for one mile and three furlongs, and going on to Hawera she took the Egmont Cup. A week later Piuthair won the Taranaki Cup, and yesterday added the Wanganui Cup to her list of successes. She was in a handy position when the straight was reached, and when Green let her go she ran past Clarinda and Novar as if they were standing. She, however, had to keep going to stall off Rapine. Piuthair is a great filly.

in the first race of the day yesterday, Calculation, who was making his initial appearance under silk, was last, and in the concluding event Civility w.is first. Both are out of civilisation, Calculation being by California, and Civility by Elysian. Civilisation is also the dam of Siaosi, Civilform, and | Wilderness. j —-—■ I Glenross won the Stewards' Handicap! at Wanganui last season. Yesterday he! made an effort to repeat the performance. He did not get a good passage at the turn into the straight, but put in a great finishing effort, and just failed to reach First Acre by half a length. Glenross is in good fettle at present. King's Folly was a fairly useful two- j year-old, but owing to going wrong as not raced as a three-year-old. He made liis reappearance this season, and, after running unplaced on two occasions, was started in the Petre Handicap at \\ anganui yesterday. He made no race of it, for after taking charge when half the distance had been covered, he won ml easy fashion. King's Folly is quite all right now, and he : 11 be in demand if started again on Saturday. - Rapine put up a great perfomance at Wanganui yesterday, when lie ran second in the Cup to Piuthair. He had 1 10.4 on his back, and was going faster [than anything at the finish. At the entrance to the straight Piuthair had a good start of Rapine, and that gave | her the race. Rapine recently won the Summer Cup at Auckland 'with 10 v. finished third in the Wellington Cup with a similar impost, and was second in the Wanganui Cup with 10.4 —three great performances.
