IN FROM THE COUN'-RY-"l'm from Mangawai, up North, and I'll have to wire for the money," said Frank Rooney (46), who was fined 5/ or ■>i hours for being drunk on the railway station last night, and a further £3 and costs fl, or seven days in Mount Eden, for using obscene language. The senior sergeant said that Rooney, while drunk, made himself very objectionable, using the language to all and sundry. Rooney was given until this afternoon to pay his fines. ANOTHER UNFORTUNATE WOMAN "This is another of the unfortunate women we have been collecting during the past week," stated Senior Sergeant Edwards when Meryl Julian (24) pleaded guilty to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person who consorted with reputed thieves and other undesirables. Mr. McLiver, who appeared for Julian, said that a friend was willing to pay her faje to Hamilton, where she could spend Christmas with her people. Mr. Hunt remanded her until to-mor-row morning for medical examination. THE SEASON'S GREETINGS. "Guilty, your Worship! The compliments of the season to you, your Worship! It's Christmas-time, you know!" It was Ernest Edward Maxey (45) who extended the season's greetings to Mr. Hunt. Maxey was charged with being drunk and disorderly in Broadway, Newmarket, and also with having procured liquor while the subject of a prohibition order. Senior Sergeant Edwards said that it was Maxey*s fifth breach of his order. He was practically incorrigible, and when in liquor he usually lost his mental balance. Yesterday he was kneeling in the street, praying, calling out to motorists, and waving his arms about. The magistrate fined Maxey £2. or seven days on each charge. And. what is more. Mr. Hunt did not reciprocate Maxey*s greetings.
