NEWMARKET COUNCIL

The Newmarket Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding. % Overbridge Decking.—A letter from the District Engineer of Railways intimated that tbe suggestion regarding tbe renewal of the decking of tbe Khyber Pass overbridge in concrete was impracticable, as the construction of the bridge would not permit of a concrete surface. The Streets Committee reported that there was no alternative but to accept tbe decision of the Department, but it recommended that the council should make a strong protest against the am'oust of the estimated cost. The recommendation was adopted. Local Authorities' Conference. —It was decided to accept the Invitation on behalf of all councillors. . Work on Overbridge. «— The engineer reported that the total amount of filling deposited by the contractor at the Victoria Crescent overbridge approaches was 5919 cubic yards. The sub-grade was ready to receive excavated material. | Traffic Affairs.—Tbe traffic inspector reported that 826 driving licenses had been issued. Five car and truck "drivers passed. the tests and were -granted licenses. Works in Hand. —The King Street crossing roadway was reported to be in an unsatisfactory state, and it was decided to communicate with the Railway Department on the matter. Question of Taxi Stand. —A letter was received from a taxi cab company stating that the suggested rank for its cars was not suitable, and asking If a new stand could be created in Broadway, near the corner of Remuera Road, south side. The Streets Committee recommended that a stand be made for not more than three cars at the corner of Remuera Road and Broadway. It was decided that the Mayor and Crs. Kelleway and Smerdon Join the committee in deciding on a suitable locality for the stand. I

Tender Accepted.—The tender of Messrs.] Isherwood and Bellam for £2141 18/8 for: the concrete paving ot Short. Street and i Victoria Crescent, was accepted. Business Promotion Society—The council: decided to contribute £25 towards the carnival, to be held during show week byi the Newmarket Business Promotion Society. ' Outhwaite Park. —It was decided to. erect a caretaker's house in Outhwaite i Park. The scheme providing for the con : j struction of rockeries, paths, arid a chil-' dren's playground was approved. The advice of the Play Association is to be snupht with regard to the formation of the park.
