THAMES BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
PUBLIC "UTILITIES COMMITTEE. COUNCIL TO CO-OPERATE. The suggested formation of a public utilities committee, which was enthusiastically taken up by the business men of Thames, was the subject of a recent lengthy communication to the borough council from the Thames •Chamber of Commerce. In replying to same, the Oeneral Purposes Committee of the council stated that, while being desirous of bringing Thames into line with the progress and advancement of other large towns, the council would require to particularly observe the financial aspect of any proposals brought forward In view of its present financial position. The committee suggests that should the Chamber of Commerce be favourable to promoting a district utilities committee the council co-operate in the matter by being represented at a conference for such purpose. The committee's report was adopted.
•Some time ago the Thames Ratepayers' Association wrote to the Borough Council protesting against the further proposed expenditure of £3000 on the Walotahi quarry in the absence of any assurance of a payable market for the output. They felt that the borough works still ■to be done did not warrant the further outlay. They desired to know if a favourable market had been secured, and if not whait purpose the council had In view in making the further expenditure. They .also asked for •certain alterations to the present sanitary service. The council relegated these matters" to a committee for a report
At the last meeting of the council a further letter was received from the association asking for a copy of the report of the committee to its previous communication. The association also drew attention to the bad condition of Hill Street, and to the serious damage done to borough roads from Burke street to the borough boundary by the carting of heavy spawls for the 'harbour board works, and requested that a restriction of loading or paymeHt for damage done should be enforced against the contractors.
On the motion of Cr. Bongard it was decided to reply that committee reports were not supplied individually, but whatever was passed was handed to the Press; *«. / clal ™ be made on the harbour board Hill !??£?♦ t0 T " rar « Road, and that the •Hill Street matter he referred to the engineer for a report. cil - lr «i to tue
