DEVONPORT'S ELECTRICITY.

- ■ • CONTROL BY POWER BOARD. QUESTION OF DEPOSITS. It was mentioned at a meeting of the Waitemata Power Board this morning that the arrangements for the purchase of the Devonport power plant had been completed, but nothing final could be done until the Devonport finances had been audited. The chairman (Mr. J. W. Hayden) said that there were a lot of decisions to be made as to what to do in regard to the staff and consumers. There was a credit balance of £4647 in the Devonport working account, and £074 consumers' deposits. The Devonport Council's practice was to accept £2 in some cases, and £1 in others, hold the money for two years, and then, if payments were made regularly, to refund the money. The Power Board's system was to charge a deposit of 10/, and the question now was which one to adopt. A member: Why alter it? The chairman said that the point was what new consumers should be charged. It had been urged that 10/ was insufficient at Devonport, because there were so many visitors there. However, there were a number of policy matters' to be decided, and there would be another opportunity to discuss the matter. November — 30 has been suggested as the date for the election of three members to represent the borough of Devonport on the board.
