The first round of the ladies' golf championship of New Zealand was played at the Balmacewan links this morning in fine weather. The course is drying quickly and improving, and the greens should be at their best by Monday or Tuesday. Results: — Miss Kay (St. Clnir) beat Mrs. Preston (Avondale) 6 up and 4 to play. Miss Pumphrey (Christchurch) beat Mrs. C. Jones (Invercargill) 1 up. Mrs. S. (1. Kerr (Timaru) beat Mrs. R. Orbell (North Otago) 5 up and ;i to play. SOUTH BEATS NORTH. THE AUCKLAND PLAYERS. DUNEDIX, this day. | In the inter-island match, won by the I South by 5 matches to 3, at the golf championship, Auckland was represented by Miss Payton. Miss Snodgrass (Rotorua). Miss Culling, and Miss topper. The match between Mrs. Dodgshun (New Zealand champion) and Miss Payton resulted in good golf throughout. After halving the first two holes. Miss Payton came i up at the fifth. Mrs. DodgSihun won the seventh (4 and 5), and became square at the turn. The tenth Mrs. Dodgshun approached out for a half in 3. The next three holes went to Miss I'aton, including a 3 at "McGlashan's," making her 3 up and o to ,20. The next three were halved, the match going to Miss Payton, 3 up and 2.
