THE GOLF "OPEN."

CHAMPIONSHIP AT MIRAMAR. ° c FIRST BOUNDS TO-DAY. ( LINKS IX PERFECT ORDER. v .MOSS AND DOBSON IX THE LEAD. ? (By Tilograph—Press Association.) YVELLIXGTOX, this day. - Miramar link? were in perfect order , after the rain, which had slowed yip the fairways', and is likely to lengthen the scores at the long holes. The greens are perfect, and are warmly praised by Australian and other golfing visitors, who thronged the course yesterday for pre liminary practices. Hector Morrison, the leading Australian, hits low, straight tee shots with delightful sting and run, and is a wizard with the mashie; but, like all Australians, found the greens slow after the fast Australian turf. Some of the Australians' experiences with iron and i mashie shots on the soft turf were quite ( interesting, as they had to learn to hit t all their shots clean, without assistance t from the ground, and were at first invarl- s ably short approaching and putting. Mor- * rison. however, did a nk-e 70 yesterday. ! including two sixes due to lack of firmness on the greens. He played well up ' to the highest Xew Zealand national handicap of one. Ross j(Dunedin). Wright (Timarui, the Macfarlanes (Christchimh), and A. G. Sime (Westport) are all in good fettle, and should give a good account of themselves. The wet weather will affect the course less than the wind, which lengthens all the long holes and intensities the narrowfairways, making the course, which lies open to the seashore, a severe test of golf. The whole course has been strengthened and improved for the ' meeting. The first round of the open chain- 1 pion<ship is being played to-day. : The card at 1 p.m. was:—YV. R. ; Dobsoii 76, £. J.
