DEATH AT SEA.
STEWARD ON THE lONIC. SHIP'S DOCTOR EXONERATED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. An inquest regarding the death of the steward Reginald Denniston, of pneumonia, on board the lonic, when two days out. from Colon, was continued before Mr. Riddell, S.M., to-day. When the inquiry opened on September 27, allegations were made that deceased had been neglected by the ship's doctor. Rev., Harold, of Canterbury, gave evidence to-day to having seen deceased the day before his death and on one or two other occasions before. Deceased made no complaints. He told witness that he had a very fine doctor doing everything he could for him. In reply to Mr. O'Donovan, witness said he never visited Denniston when th; latter was in the "glory hole." The coroner stated that the allega tions of negligence made against Dr Brennon had not been proved, and thai flo jury would convict on the evidence which was too conflicting. In the coroner's 'ner's opinion the deceased received everj ' care and attention from the doctor anc made no complaint regarding the treatment and attention he was receiving. The coroner stated also that Dennistor was taken up on deck, without the permission of the doctor, by two othei stewards, This, although done with the best of intentions, ought not to havt been done. But for this it wa-; probabl. ' there would have been no cause for the ; inquiry. The finding was that the deceased died 1 of double pneumonir, and no blame was attachable to anyone.
