BOXING.
ANOTHER WIN FOR PURDY. beats Mcknight our points. SUCCESSFUL CAMBRIDGE TOURNEY. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CAMBRIDGE, this day. The Cambridge .Town Hall was packed to overflowing last evening when the newly-formed local Boxing Association held its initial tournament, which proved most successful in all directions. It was an excellent programme and a well conducted tourney, and augurs well for the future of the association. The principal feature was the professional contest of ten three-minute rounds for a £100 purse between Chas. Purdy (Auckland), Bst lHlb, and Nelson McKnight (Hamilton), lOst 31b, which resulted in a merited win for the former on points in a really good all-round contest. Purdy's science was too much for McKnight, who, nevertheless, fought an excellent contest. The fight opened quietly and continued so to up to the fifth round. McKnight then forced the pace for the next two rounds, but Purdy's evasiveness stood him in good stead. McKnight tired a little in the oiifhtli and ninth, Purdy scoring the points to secure him the verdict.
The amateur contests resulted:— Bantams: D. Wilson (Cambridge) beat D. McCathie (Cambridge). Lightweights: J. Wilson (Cambridge) beat J. Morris (Cambridge), B. Nelson (Te Aroha) beat C. McKnight (Hamilton).
Welterweight: E.Walters (Cambridge) beat I. Lunn (Matamata), L. Mitchell (Auckland) beat F. Cane (Auckland). J. Purdy and Jock Wilson (Auckland) gave a good exhibition bout.
