BANDITARY AND PIRACY.

CANTON'S BAD BEHAVIOUR.

HONGKONG, August 18. In the course of a -speech at the opening of the Lane and Crawford Company's new premises, the Governor, Sir Cecil Clements said: "T?:e miscalled 'Strike' Committee has not realised the futility of organising banditry and piracy, in order to do injury to Hongkong.

"Canton has not realised that the first duty of the Government is to maintain law and order, instead of conniving at organised piracy and brigandage in the provincial capital. ,

"What it hopes to realise, other than injury to, its own country, and its subjects, I do not "know, but I am certain it will not result in permanent injury to Hongkong."—(Reuter.)
