SWIFT JUSTICE.
MOTOR THIEF SHOT. GENDARME I>OES*P'T WAIT. PARIS, August 23. When a gendarme named Bergier saw Bereange, a well-known motor thief, driving off with a stolen car, he leaped on to the footboard and ordered him to drive to a police station. Seizing a spanner, Bersange struck the gendarme a violent blow on the head. Though dazed by the blow, Bergier drew his revolver and shot the thief, who, died a_t the wheel. The car then rushed down a slope into I canal and crashed into a barge, where it brought up with its gruesome freight. (A. and N.Z.)
