RIVAL UNIONS.
MATTER OF ENTRANCE MONEY
PROCEEDINGS FAIL.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
INYERCARGILL, Saturday,
There vrere lively proceedings in the Court when three hotel workers sued Charles Provan, union gecretary, for 3/, money paid by them as entrance fee to the new Southland Union of Hotel Workers, allegedly under a misapprehension. Mr. <j- 8- Thomson, Dunedin, appeared for the plaintiffs. He had many heated exchanges with counsel for the defence en d with defendant. It was suggested that he was taking an opportunity for indulging in propaganda, and that jealousy at the formation of a separate Southland union was the cause of the actions, which it was said, were engineered by the Otago Union. Vehement denials were made by Mr. Thorn son, who hinted that the new union would not be admitted to affiliation with the federation. The magistrate said he failed to see jn what way the money had been paid under a misapprehension. He dismissed the three cases.
