PROBATIONER IN TROUBLE. ISSUES VALUELESS CHEQUES. srx months rx gaol. "This young man was placed on probation only on July 12 last. He was before the Court on five charges of false pretences; but he was not satisfactory on probation, and only reported to mc once. It is only wasting time doing anything for him. for here he is up again."' said Mr. YV. J. Campbell, probation officer, who was referring to Arthur Clark (2S). Clark pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning to charges of incur-
ring a debt of £7 0/4 with William Dargie. thereby obtaining credit by fraud; obtaining, with intent to defraud. the sum of £8 from Gordon Bartleet by means of a valVeless cheque, and also with having failed to comply with the terms- and conditions of his release on probation.
Detective Sergeant O'Brien said that accused went to Dargie's and made arrangements to purchase a suit, shirt, and socks. He said that he was selling a farm to an "English Johnnie." and would call hack later. However, when he returned on the Saturday he said that he did not have the money. He was given the poods, and promised to pay for them on Monday. When seen later by Mr Dargie about the matter, Clark handed Mr. Dargie a cheque as payment, but thia was dishonoured. Respecting thp other offence, accueeo called on Mr. Rartleet, whom he once knew at Matamata. and borrowed £2 Bartleet sold farms, and accused gave him to understand that he would purchase a farm. Two weeks later accused called on Mr. Bartleet and gave him a cheque for £10 0/0, requesting him to deduct the £2 borrowed. Accused was then handed the change. The cheque was dishonoured, and Clark had nothing in the bank. Clark told the magistrate that he understood he only had to report to Mr. Campbell once every month. Chief DetPCtive Cummings: He knew that h<? had no right to go round issuing valueless cheques. Mr. Poynton: Here is a man who was up recently f.nd was admitted to probation. Xow he- is acting the fraud again. He seems determined to lead a bad life. On each of two charges he will be sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the sentences to be cumulative."
