NORTH SHORE'S SUCCESS. STILL IN CHATHAM CUP. DEFEAT OF HUNTLY. North Shore journeyed to Huntly on Saturday and by defeating the local Thistle paved their way to the semi-final round of the Chatham Cup, the New Zealand club premiership. In Auckland two competition games were played, and although the championship is already decided both matches were fast and keenly contested. On Blandford Park Thistle and Northcote for the third time fought a strenuous contest and the suburbanites registered their third win over the Scots. The ground was very wet and treacherous, but the game was of a surprisingly keen nature. Tn the meeting of Ponsonby and V.M.C.A. thpre was some bright football, and the total of the goals scored testifies to the superiority of attack over defence. THISTLE V. NORTHCOTE. The opening produced a thrill. The samp was fast, and Northcote left marked "well into position and the ball was centred accurately. Marshall was on thp spot, and headed into the net. Christie kicking out just too late. Northcote 1, Thistle 0. Following mid-field play. Thistle were accorded a penalty, from which rvickson equalised the scores. It was doomed to be a day of penalties, and Reid brought Marshall down. McGarry took the kick, but shot softly at Morris, who saved easily. In an instant Thisrle were on top of Hibbert and company. They gained possession and had no difficulty in scoring from close in. Thistle 2. Northcote 1. Play continued to be fast and keen. Following clever combination between Dunsmore and Ahem. Burford and Tremain swung along with accurate passes. Burford centred nicely, and Tremain, with an open coal, drove hard. Morris, however, saved brilliantly at the expense of a corner. Williams took the kick and for the first time in the history of Blandford Park scored direct with a great shot. With the scores again level, the game became surprisingly fast. Each goal was visited in turn, and in spite of the ground conditions some bright football was seen. Till the interval play was even. In the last minute Northcote broke away and Marshall scored with a nice shot. Thistle forced matters on resuming, and Lyon was tested, but saved smartly. From end to end the play raged, and in a Thistle raid from a corner Dunsmore equalised. Northcote was not done with yet, and the forwards broke away. Entwistle tried a shot, and Morris failed to hold the ball, the referpe ruling it over the line, a run by Burford was the commencement of Northcote's fifth goal. His shot was only partly saved by Morris, and. Marshall running in. added another point. Right to the finish play was hard and fast, but There was no further score, the final score being:— Northcote 5 Thistle 3 YJtt.CA. V. PONSONBY.

Ponsonby won the toss, and Humphreys set T.M.C.A. on attack. Otter from the left wing put in a great rentre. which Milne weakly kicked past. Y.M. attacked, and Kennedy handling, saw Humphreys score from a penalty.

Shortly afterwards a great centre from Galley passed over V.M.'s goal, and immediately afterwards. Switees. in the Y.M. goal, save<J a high one well. Innes put in a great centre, which narrowly missed. Again Y.M. attacked. Otter putting in a

beautiful shot, which Jack saved splendidly. Combined play by Humphreys and Patoa saw Otter put in a great centre which Humphreys turned to account. Dick and W. Lewis, for Y.M., and Morrison and Williams, for Ponsonby, were playing well in defence. Humphreys then beat the whole of the Ponsonby defence and scored another good goal. Humphreys again broke away, beating Jack with a great shot. On resuming Ponsonby. per Knott and Hunter, set up an attack, which Lewis cleared, and Y.M. attacked, but Kennedy cleared. Ponsonby now set up a hot attack, Surtees saving. Not to be denied Innes scored from a pass by Hunter. Y.M. 4, Ponsonby 1. Ponsonby now were strenuously attacking, and a penalty gave Dick another goal. Y.M. 4. Ponsonby 2. Good play by Otter saw Humphreys break away and score his fifth goal. Y.M. 5. Ponsonby 2. Attacking again strongly W. Knott shot hard. Y.M. goalie failed to hold the greasy ball. Y.M. 5, Ponsonby 3. Ponsonby forwards, ably led by Innes, were combining beautifully at this stage. Another great run by Otter with the Y.M. forwards in support, saw Mellor net. Y.M. 6. Ponsonby 3. A great run by Innes and cross-kick saw L. Knott again score. The North Island se-mi-final for the Chatham Cup was played at Huntly before a largp crowd this afternoon. North Shore team had a sood trip through by road, and the recreation ground was in fair order for the game, their opponents being Huntly Thistle. The teams lined out as follow : — North Shore. —Lipscombe, Whowell, Gerrard. Colebourne. Bird. Baxter, Palmer, Dacre. .lav. Woolley. Hipkins. Huntlv Thistle.—Stirling. White. Whitelaw. Cuthbert. Taif. Halley. Gavin, McLuclrie. Lnnsstaff. Patrick. Johnston. Mr. J. Baillie. of Hamilton, was referee. Huntly won the toss and played downhill, rolebourne sent Palmer away on the rteht, a long centre, landing on the roof of the net. Hipkins worked uphill on the left and cro-ssed a srood centre, which Stirling 1 cleared. ShoTe continued to press, and Dacre gnvp Woolley an opening, but Huntly smothered up. LongstalT ran throush with a tricky dash, but Whowell cleared. Huntly left broke away, and Lipscombe had to clear from Johnston. Johnston made a fast dash again, and looked dancerous when grassed by Bird, and Whowell relieved the pressure. Play was fast and willine. but both sets of forwards lacked combination. Whitelaw being conspicuous in breaking up the Shore attack. Huntly pressed ajrain. and Lipscombe conceded a corner in saving from Patrick. Then Palmer broke away and crossed a hard centre, which missed, and the ball came back to Baxter, who sent in a hard, long drive which Stirling failed to clear, and Jay dashed in to open the score. Shore 1. Huntly O. This encourajred the visitors, and three minutes later Dacre made an opening for Palmer, who sent to Jay. and the junior centre netted ajrain. Shore 2, Huntly 0. In the second spell Shore attacked. A hot shot from Dacre was nearly through, and then Woolley sent over, from close range, and two corners to Shore went begging. Hunrly took a turn, and from a pass by MeLuckie the ball went to Johnston, who dashed through and scored with a low drive. North Shore 2, Huntly 1. Shorp came back again, and Palmer forced a corner from Whitelaw, and his kick from the- flap landed under the bar, where Dacre headed and put his side two up again.

WELLINGTON BEATS CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. Wellington met Canterbury iv the Football Association Trophy competition, at the Basin Reserve, to-day. The game was played on a dry ground in sunshine and an absence of wind. Canterbury kicked off. but Wellington soon pressed, and put Canterbury on the defence. Canterbury pressed, and Wellington conceded a corner, but McGirr cleared. Wellington pressed and scored first, the result of a pass from the wing. McDougall came right out of Canterbury's goal, and Ballard had no difficulty in scoring. Shortly afterwards Lothian, Wellington's centre forward, received a pass from Ballard and scored, making the Wellington total 2. Canterbury pressed, and gave Wellington a bad time for a while. McLaughlin almost scored with a header, but Tarrant, in goal, brought off a brilliant save McDougall made two fine saves from shots from the wing. Wellington were penalised for a foul, but Tarrant stopped the penalty, which was taken by Ritchie. Shortly after the start of the second spell Sutherland got the ball away. Tarrant came out of his goal, and Trotter, coming up qnickly, scored. Wellington 2, Canterbury 1. Play became very fast. McKee took a long shot from near half-way, and scored. Cudby took a corner, and Lothian brought the Wellington total to four. Wellington did most of the attacking, and the game was mostly in Canterbury s half. McDougall, in goal for Canterbury, was railed on frequently, and brought off many fine saves. C. McDougall sent in a swift shot from the wing, but Tarrant held the leather. Canterbury made strenuous efforts to score in th* concluding stages, but were unsuccessful, and the game ended : Wellington 4 Canterbury ...'. 1 REP. TRAINING.
