THEFT AT MARAMARUA.
YOUNG MAN ARRESTED.
COJOHTTED FOR SENTENCE.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) MERCER, Wednesday. At the Police Court at Mercer today, before Justices, a young man, age* 23, pleaded guilty to a, charge of theft, the articles stolen comprising a newsuit and an almost complete ouiit ot male attire, as well as a stop-watch, and odds and ends of a total value of £2G 12/. All the goods stolen were the property of Mr. Kenneth MeCardle.. farmer, of Maramarua. The circumstances as outlined during the hearing showed that accused, while in the employ of Mr. McCardle was left in charge of the farm during a brief absence of the owner and his wife. On their return the front of the house was found to have been broken into and the place ransacked, while the employee had disappeared. Constable McClinchy, of Paeroa, stated that lie arrested the accused at Ngatea, and the whole of the missing property was found in his possession. In a voluntary statement, the accused admitted the offence, declaring that he did not know what possessed him to commit the act. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
